Quick Summary on God's Holy Name

UPDATE: I have recently added this old post back to the blog.

I was recently asked about the name of God (hi there Zach). And I want to expand my opinion of it a bit more.

Ex: 3:14

Ex: 3:14
And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

Here God says He is who He is. This is an important passage in the scriptures, as God doesn't require a name. As God has always been and always will be, everything is temporary. If God so wills it, everything, and I do mean everything, heaven, hell, earth, angels, seraphim, people, animals, foul, creatures, everything, can be gone.

Because of this, the only thing in this world, and indeed everything that can possibly exist, relies directly on God for needs. Nothing can survive without God, except God Himself.

I have heard a few things from Athiests, such as, the universe has always existed. To be fair, something has always existed. The particles that created the "Big Bang", have always existed (otherwise there would be no "Big Bang"), or God has always existed. I have taken the thought that God has always existed and my eyes have been opened. I couldn't look at the world again in another fashion, it will always be as God see's it. However we are going a bit off track.

The tetragrammaton, the initials of God were also brought up. The English translated to "YHWH". I have never held the fact that these letters make Gods name, as to me, it's just initials. If Gods name could have been from it, it would have been by now. As it is, we have 2 main translations trying to get it into prespective, neither of which to me personally, is Gods actual name. Those being "Yahweh" and "Jehovah".

Does God need a name? In a way, yes. The name was known during the 2nd temple period where sacrifices would be held during Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur. However with the destruction of the 2nd temple, the name has since been lost with the temple. As it should remain.

Jhn:20:31
ταυτα δε γεγραπται ινα πιστευσητε οτι ο ιησους εστιν ο χριστος ο υιος του θεου και ινα πιστευοντες ζωην εχητε εν τω ονοματι αυτου

Jhn:20:31
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

There is many verses about the name of Christ, and I agree fully that without the name of Christ, we have no salvation, the gift of God comes down from heaven through the name of Jesus Christ, and saves our souls from the fires of hell. However to get the gift of God, you must use the name of Christ. If this were reversed and the name of God was used, then what would be the point of the Messiah? There would be none and as it has been put:

1Corinth:15:2
δι ου και σωζεσθε τινι λογω ευηγγελισαμην υμιν ει κατεχετε εκτος ει μη εικη επιστευσατε

1Corinth:15:2
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

If you don't use the name of Christ and use the name of God instead, then the gospel itself, is meaningless, as there would be no point.

Personally I see the lack of the name of God being around a good thing. For some various reasons, in this final paragraph I shall give you a few: 1: You cannot blaspheme a name you do not know, 2: You cannot call upon a name and do all sorts of evil to a name, if you do not know what it is, 3: If a name is unknown, you cannot commit a sin of witchcraft with said name. What you are looking at is essentially, the name of God is protected and kept holy. I for one, will not chase down the name of God for fear of my actions causing it to come under blaspheme.
